IAMU Annual General Assembly

The Annual General Assembly (AGA) is a forum to allow the exchange of information, policy approvals, and the development and fostering of good relationsand collaboration among IAMU member universities. Comprising all member universities, the AGA consists of two major events, the IAMU General Assembly and the IAMU Conference.

IAMU has held an AGA at one of its member universities every year since 2000. The Presidents’ Forum, the Plenary Session, the IAMU Conference and the IAMU Student Programme are jointly organised by a host university that is selected by the International Executive Board.

IAMU Research Projects

IAMU has sought ideas for innovative research activities to promote progress in capacity building at maritime universities all over the world.

2010 – 2011  International Association of Maritime Universities, Research Project “Research of algorithm of collecting valuable information MET system and Human Resource Database of IAMU member Universities/Institutions”

Working Group

The OBT (onboard training) project is based on the IAMU Tasmanian Statement (Objective 6: “Provision of quality sea time for cadets”). The key goal for the project is the Development of measures to ensure quality of OBT for First Certificate of Competency (FCoC) as a part of the mandatory seagoing service required by the STCW Convention. In 2016 the IAMU Working Group on comprehensive study on quality of onboard training was established.

2016 – present   NU OMA Senior Lecture Capt. Dmytro Zhukov is a member of IAMU Working Group on comprehensive study on quality of onboard training (OBT).

During IMO Events the following papers on behalf of IAMU were prepared and presented as a result of IAMU OBT WG work:

IAMU Liaison Committee

The IAMU Liaison Committee is responsible for:

.1 advising the International Executive Board on contemporary issues in the international maritime community associated with IAMU mandates;

.2 facilitating communication with the maritime industry, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other maritime organisations;

.3 representing the IAMU at IMO meetings related to the activities of the Association; and

.4 ensuring that the IAMU’s contribution to the IMO as a Non-Governmental Organisation in Consultative status is ever more effective and valued.

Student Forum

The IAMU Student Forum provides an opportunity for the next generation of maritime industry leaders to connect and collaborate with world-leading researchers, educators and experts from the maritime industry as well as students from all over the world.

The forum consists of a 2-day workshop and 1-day technical tour. Over the first two days of the forum, students worked under the supervision of their group facilitators to identify the underlying issues at the heart of each given topic, while also coming up with unique suggestions and solutions for dealing with them.

On the final day of the forum, the participants visited IMO Headquarters to widen their perspectives and knowledge by learning about maritime history and being exposed to different values.

The IAMU Student Forum was a global event in every sense.

Global Maritime Professional (GMP) Initiative

The GMP initiative is intended to meet the envisaged needs of industry and a rapidly evolving educational and career context while catering for the professional development aspirations of individual seafarers. The new concept of a Global Maritime Professional has been described based on information gathered through a comprehensive survey designed and administered to the membership of IAMU and to other stakeholders in the maritime industry.

NF-IAMU GMP Fellowship Programme

At the 20th Commemorative Annual General Assembly held in October 2019, Dr. Yohei Sasakawa, the Honorary Chair of IAMU, declared two new initiatives, one for students and the other for educators, to educate the next generation of young global maritime professionals in alignment with the Global Maritime Professional – Body of Knowledge (hereafter referred “GMP-BOK”).

The NF-IAMU Global Maritime Professional (GMP) Faculty Fellowship is targeted at IAMU member university faculty members who have the potential to facilitate the implementation of the GMP Initiative and to carry out research that supports the goals of the initiative.

After the declaration by Dr. Sasakawa at AGA20, IAMU conducted “Pilot project” targeted students in IAMU member universities as trial before fully implement the fellowship project.

After a competitive selection for compliance with the project requirements, the following NU OMA cadets were selected for fellowship grant support:
