11On June 4, 2019 seafarers vetting seminar took place in National University ”Odessa Maritime Academy” held by INTERTANKO (the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners). The event was attended by Steve Hardy, Chairman of the INTERTANKO Certification Committee, Norman Schmiedl, Columbia Shipmanagement Representative and others.

The association has 274 active members from 43 countries and 286 associate members. It brings together around 1968 tankers, that is, almost 80% of tanker tonnage. The Association may include any free owners or operators of tankers, except for tonnage owned by oil companies or government agencies. Members of the Association are the largest classification societies.

The Association aims at cooperating with their members in matters of general policy in the international sphere, participation in work and cooperation with all organizations on issues of interest to members of the organization.

INTERTANKO is actively engaged in market research and publishes independent assessments of major trends in issues and proposals for tanker tonnage.

The issues of safety of navigation, safety engineering and prevention of environmental threats occupy an important place in the activities of the Association. The result of this work was the adoption by IMO resolutions on the use of an inert gas system, double hulls of tankers.

The association has active working committees such as: legal, ports and terminals, shipping policy, technical, statistics and market research, environment. The organization has consultative status with the International Maritime Organization and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and actively cooperates with BIMCO, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).
