Img C45f3b965cad6177c603466b763fd8e8 VFrom October 30 till November 1, 2019, the 20th Commemorative Annual General Assembly of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) and IAMU Conference were held in Tokyo, Japan. V.M. Zakharchenko, Vice-rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Affairs of, M.V. Chesnokova, Head of International Cooperation Department, D.S. Zhukov, a senior lecturer of the Ship Handling Department represented National University «Odessa Maritime Academy» at the Annual General Assembly.

The 20th IAMU Assembly was opened by Dr. Neil Bose, Head of Executive Committee of AGA 20. Welcoming speeches were delivered by Dr. Yohei Sasakawa, Chair of the Nippon Foundation, Capt. Samuel Pecota, Chair of IAMU, Mr. Kitack Lim, Secretary General of IMO and Mr. Stewart Inglis, Senior Advisor of International Chamber of Shipping.

Dr. Yohei Sasakawa noted IAMU‘s significant contribution to the international maritime education and training system in his report. The status of a non-governmental organization at IMO gives IAMU even more opportunities to participate in the activities of different IMO’s institutions and to influence other international associations of higher educational institutions.

Capt. Tomoyuki Koyama, Capt. John Lloyd, Chief Executive Officer of the Nautical Institute and Mr. Brad Groves, Chair of Maritime Safety Committee also addressed the opening meeting.

All speakers repeatedly noted IAMU‘s active position in the international maritime education and training system and its contribution to the training of future marine professionals according to the requirements of international conventions on maritime safety and environmental protection.

Besides, presentations of the activities of IAMU‘s working groups were held during the Assembly.

On October 31, 2019 IAMU Presidents’ Forum was held to adopt IAMU‘s Tokyo Regulations. Following the Presidents’ Forum, presentations were made on IAMU‘s scientific projects.

At the plenary session of the Assembly, the new membership of IAMU‘s Executive Committee was approved and a new IAMU‘s Chairman was elected. Mr. Glenn Blackwood, the President of Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland became the new IAMU‘s Chairman.

The reports of IAMU‘s Sub-Committees were approved.

The representatives of NU «ОМА» in the name of S.A., Karyansky, Dean of Automation Faculty and M.V. Chesnokova, Head of International Cooperation Department were awarded with the honorary certificates according to the results of IAMU‘s Sub-Committee work on academic activities.

The meeting agreed the dates of the next Anniversary of the 21th Annual General Assembly IAMU to be held at the premises of Batumi State Maritime Academy, Georgia from October 12 till 14, 2020.
