The 30th anniversary graduation ceremony of the International Maritime Law Institute hosted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was held on June 15 in Vittoriosa, Malta. The delegation of National University «Odessa Maritime Academy» included Alexander Shemyakin, First Vice-Rector and Alexandra Suprun, specialist of the International Cooperation Department who participated in the graduation ceremony. The ceremony was also attended by Kitak Lim, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, President and Representatives of the Ministries of Malta, delegations of international universities and organizations.

This year, Nikolay Kozachenko, a graduate from NU «ОМА», who was nominated to study at the Institute, obtained a master’s degree in the international maritime law, as confirmed by diploma with distinction. Funding was provided by the International Transport Workers’ Federation. He became the seventh graduate of the Academy, who studied at the Institute.

The International Maritime Law Institute was established under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization in 1989 in Malta. The Master Programme is open to law graduates already working in the field of maritime law, law departments or firms dealing with maritime issues. The program is also designed for individuals seeking to build a career in the field of maritime law. A requirement for a candidate is a diploma of a recognized university. According to the programme results, the student is to obtain a master’s degree in the international maritime law. It is anticipated that the graduates of the Institute will become experts whose competence is necessary for the application of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and other transactions in the national legal system.
